Role of intracavernous papaverine induced erections in sexual rehabilitation of paraplegic patients - A clinico psychological study SC Sharma, R Singh, SS Sangwan, S Singh January 2002, 36(1):42-45Fifty four male patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) with injury levels between D1 and L 3 were given intracavernous injection of papaverine to study its effects in the form of erection, rigidity, maximum duration of erection, possibility of ejaculation, coitus and psychological satisfaction. Fifty patients could be followed up. Of them 40 had full erection, eight partial and two had no erection. Mean dose given was 15 mg (range 10 - 30 mg). Duration of erection was 1 to 4 hour in 46 patients and in none it lasted for more than 5 hours. Eight patients had off and on ejaculation and semen analysis showed increased number of deformed and less motile sperms. Forty six patients were psychologically satisfied. Except for few minor complications like bruise (5), automatic dysreflexia (2) and intraurethral injections (4), no major complication occurred. Intracavernous papaverine therapy is safe, cheap and effective in paraplegics with erectile impotence. This mode of treatment may be used with confidence in socio-sexual rehabilitation of male paraplegics with SCI.

The clinical correlation of tight tendo achilles with plantar fasciitis A Wokhlu, J Rai, SS Gill January 2002, 36(1):49-52Plantar fasciitis is a common foot complaint due to the overload of plantar fascia at its calcaneal insertion compounded by other associated anatomical or systemic causes. One hundred feet in 50 patients over the age of 20 years were studied, and categorised into symptomatic and asymptomatic, and asymptomatic feet were used as control. Significant restriction of dorsiflexion was noticed when measured with knee in extension and with knee in flexion. No correlation was observed between duration of symptoms and the degree of restriction of dorsiflexion as well as the loss of power and degree of decrease in circumference or bulk of posterior calf muscles. No correlation was found between plantar fascitis and obesity, pes planus, diabetes, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and calcaneal bone spur. The strength and flexibility deficits in posterior calf musculature in plantar fasciitis was seen. These deficits are either the cause or contribute to the morbidity.

Role of fine needle aspiration cytology in vertebral body lesions R Aggarwal, U Bandlish, S Mahajan, N Gupta, R Rambani January 2002, 36(1):46-48To evaluate the role of FNAC in the diagnosis of vertebral body lesions, FNAC under image intensifier control was carried out on 25 cases in which the diagnosis was not clear on X-rays/ CT scan examination. Comparison was made between the provisional, cytological and the final diagnosis. The study confirmed the usefulness of FNAC in all regions of spine from C 6 to L 5 with accuracy of over 75%. The procedure was quick, inexpensive and could be performed as an outdoor procedure with minimal complications.
