The Basics of Arthritis : Kandoi Manoj R, First edition pp 194 with many illustrations, index 2003, Mumbai, The National Book Depot, Price Rs. 100.

In developing countries like ours, general practitioners and medical officers in outlying hospitals have to deal with various types of arthritis and their complications. It is difficult to write for them as well as for undergraduates as it is desirable to have more details of the subject when writing for medical students. Dr. Kandoi has achieved this object with remarkable success in this small book. Various types of arthritis have been discussed concisely and lucidly. There is in addition a chapter on physical therapy. In the annexure, Dr. Kandoi has mentioned various differential diagnosis, causes, radiographic evaluation etc., in a point wise manner which are easy to remember, however, the description and the treatment modalities of many conditions may not be uniformly acceptable by the senior Orthopaedic surgeons and rheumatologist. Still I feel this book will be found useful by the people for whom it is meant. The book is economical and good for revision during post graduates and undergraduates examinations and is recommended for busy practitioners to refresh their knowledge time to time.

The role of mathematics on human structures.

Adhikari SK Howrah, Dipali Publications P152 + VII with many diagrams. 2003 Price $10.95

Study of anatomy of human body has undergone several phases. The great artist Leonardo da Vinci studied it in details and drew famous sculptures in Florence and Rome. The author has tried to study and explain human body on mathematical basis. He has explained Descartes concept of pineal gland and mechanism of heart on mathematical basis. Major part of the book is devoted to skeletal system. Movements of shoulder and hip joint have been analysed on mathematical and geometrical basis. In the chapter One spine the cervical deformities and efficacy of the vertebra has been defined. Pelvic distribution of forces and femoral condyles structure has also been discussed.

The book may not interest to practicing Orthopaedic surgeons but will useful to the anatomists and basic scientists.
