A retrospective review of 40 hips with avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head treated by total hip arthroplasty was done. Eighteen hips had AVN secondary to trauma while 22 were due to non traumatic causes. Thirty hips were cemented and 10 were uncemented.Excellent short term improvement was seen as regards pain, movement and function. Comparison with THA done for Ankylosing spondylitis Rheumatoid arthritis revealed better result as regards pain, ROM and function.
