A clinico-pathological analysis of 24 cases of synovial osteochondromatosis, a rare disease in which a metaplasia occurs in the sub-synovial forming cartilaginous masses which may further ossify, was done. It is usually mono-articular, commonly involving the knee and hip joints; 2 cases of bursal osteochondromatosis, a very rare variant of the disease, are included in this series. Characteristic radiological pictures and naked eye appearances at operation, along with typical histology, help in irrefutably confirming the diagnosis. The rationale of our treatment of choice viz. synovectomy with removal of all loose bodies, has been discussed.
