Fifty two closed fractures of the femoral shaft in patients above the age of 16 years treated by open reduction and Kuntscher intramedullary nailing followed by immediate cast bracing are presented. These patients were made ambulatory 48 hours following surgery. Full weight bearing was encouraged right from the start. Stitches were removed after 3 weeks and the cast was reapplied. The brace was discarded only after radiological union.
