Primary Mycetoma Of The Patella –A Case Report

Mycetoma is a chronic granulomatous infection usually of exposed parts of the body especially of feet and hands. It begins in the soft tissues including muscles and results in tumefactions, deformities and multiple draining sinuses discharging fungal colonies called grains or granules. The common species causing mycetoma in India are Madurella mycetomi and Streptomyces madurae (Mohapatra and Bhargava 1967, Klokke et al. 1968, Chugh et al. 1975). The bone is usually involved by direct extension. Primary mycetoma of bone and especially that of patella is very rare. To the best of our knowledge only one such case has been reported in literature by Majid et al. (1964). We present here one case of primary mycetoma involving the patella. |
