Total replacement of the hip is now an established procedure for advanced coxathroses. We envisage that in the next few years this procedure will gain wide spread acceptance in this country. Total hip replacement is the only satisfactory procedure in younger patients who are crippled with this disease. The operation of low friction arthroplasty is now performed in younger patients following increasing confidence with the quality of long term results. Charnely (1976) has shown that the rate of wear of the high density polyethylene (H.D.P) socket is such that it may be expected to last for 30-35 years. Even if the socket does wear out a secondary procedure to replace it may be undertaken. In the light of this we are definite that our surgeons will be doing this operation more and more in younger individuals. In this connection we wish to present a case report where we had problems in a young individual affected by polyarticular rheumatoid arthritis. |
