The principle of resection and fusion of diseased joints has been appreciated and practiced in various forms for 2 centuries (Steward and Bland 1958). Compression arthrodesis of the knee was first described by Key in 1932, though the interest in this method was revived and popularized by Charnley (1952-60). The present report is based upon the observations of this technique in arthrodesing 30 knees in 29 patients in the personal series of the senior author (S. T. S. R.).
